In Maharashtra , in a valley below the Western Ghats, was a kingdom named Somnathpur. Ruled by the adventurous King Somdev, the kingdom was prosperous and the people happy. The king had full faith in his ministers who carried on a smooth administration. He had one son, Prince Somraj. Trained in archery and horse-riding, he too was a lover of adventure.

One day, he went to the king and said, "Father, I wish to wander about the country alone. I hope you will grant me permission. Don't worry, I will come back safely.? Somdev hesitated, he was anxious about his son's safety. He said, ?Why alone, take a few bodyguards with you or how about your friends? I am sure they will be eager to go with you"

?No, father, I wish to go alone,? replied the prince. "I shall take good care of myself, I assure you." "If your mother agrees, I will let you go," said the king.  Prince Somraj went to his mother and told her about his plans. "If you assure me that you won't get into any trouble and will come back safe, you may go, though frankly I?m not very happy." The prince touched her feet and went back to his father.

"When do you want to leave" King Somdev asked. 'Tomorrow,' said the prince. 'You'll be escorted by our soldiers till our borders," said the king. Next day, the prince started the journey on his white horse. Six soldiers accompanied him till the border. The prince rode slowly enjoying the scenes around him. Often he would stop by rivulets, leap into the cold water, eat the fruits hanging from trees, climb onto the branches, sit around and watch the birds.
